Senior Communities

How our program builds meaningful connections between seniors and students — and how it can work in your community.

Students Partner with Seniors

Senior communities benefit from meaningful, low-burden intergenerational experiences that foster connection and engagement.

Students work with seniors to learn about their lives and document their stories — creating meaningful connections that enrich seniors’ wellbeing and preserve their memories. We make the experience easy and enjoyable, blending naturally into community life while bringing joy, conversation, and lasting connections.

Youth + Senior Connections: For Senior Communities

In this short video, Tristin Cox from Canterbury of Twinsburg shares how residents are thriving through our youth service-learning program. From getting out of their rooms and enjoying meaningful conversations, to reflecting on their past and sharing good memories, the program brings joy, connection, and renewed health. Each resident also receives a beautiful, professionally written LifeBook — a personal story they can keep, revisit, and share with family and friends.

Common Questions

We work with a wide range of senior communities, and our program is designed to be flexible so it can fit many different settings. This includes community groups such as Rotary and Lions Clubs, assisted living communities, nursing homes, retirement communities, and long-term care facilities.

Every senior community is different, so we take time to understand the needs, routines, and comfort levels of each group. The program can be adjusted based on the size of the community, the level of participation residents prefer, and the type of interaction that works best. Our goal is to make participation feel natural, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

The program takes about seven total hours, but the schedule is very flexible. These hours can be spread out in different ways depending on what works best for the school and the senior community. For example, some groups choose to meet for one hour each month over the school year, while others prefer fewer visits that last a little longer.

We work together to find a schedule that feels manageable and comfortable. The program often ends with a small gathering where students present the completed LifeBooks to their senior partners. This final moment gives everyone a chance to celebrate the experience and the connections that were built along the way.

Participation is simple and low-pressure. Seniors only need to be willing to talk, share stories, and be present during the visits. No preparation is required, and there is no need to plan ahead or bring anything to the sessions.

Students guide the conversations by asking questions, so seniors never have to worry about what to say next. Each conversation moves at a comfortable pace, and participants are free to share as much or as little as they like. This approach helps seniors feel relaxed and supported throughout the experience.

Yes. Every senior who participates receives a personal copy of their LifeBook at the end of the program. The LifeBook is a keepsake that captures their stories, memories, and reflections shared during the project.

Many seniors enjoy sharing their LifeBooks with family and friends, and some choose to order additional copies. The book serves as a lasting reminder of the connections made with students and the stories that were preserved through the program.

There are many meaningful benefits for seniors and senior communities. Seniors often enjoy the opportunity to mentor young people and share their life experiences. These conversations can support communication, confidence, and a sense of purpose.

At the same time, recalling memories and engaging in meaningful conversation can offer cognitive and social benefits. Many seniors find that participating brings joy, supports a positive mood, and helps strengthen a sense of belonging within their community. For senior communities, the program creates opportunities for connection, engagement, and shared experiences that enrich daily life.
