About Us
Bringing youth and older adults together to build connection, understanding, and community through shared learning.
Our Vision
The intergenerational education program at Youth + Senior Connections is designed to bring students and older adults together in meaningful ways that support learning, connection, and community.
We envision a future where Youth + Senior Connections is woven into school districts across Northeast Ohio and, in time, expands to communities across the United States. By bringing students and older adults together through storytelling, we aim to create a model of intergenerational connection that can thrive anywhere.
Our Story
Youth + Senior Connections began in 2010 when our founder, Ariana Del Re, a classroom teacher, sought new ways to connect her students with the community while deepening their learning. Partnering with a local assisted living community, she launched a simple idea: students interviewing seniors to capture their stories. From those conversations, the LifeBook Project was born.
What started as a classroom initiative quickly revealed something profound—the relationships formed enriched both students and seniors in lasting ways. Students gained empathy, listening skills, and a sense of purpose, while older adults found joy, validation, and a way to preserve their legacies. Inspired by the impact, Ariana committed to expanding the program so other communities could benefit from the same powerful connections.
Intergenerational education program initiatives are central to Youth + Senior Connections’ educational model. In 2023, Youth + Senior Connections officially launched as a nonprofit organization (501c3 status pending) with the mission of bringing this model of mutual service and shared storytelling to more schools and senior communities.
How this Intergenerational Education Program Creates Community Impact
Youth + Senior Connections is rooted in the belief that meaningful relationships between younger and older generations strengthen communities. These experiences not only help students build confidence, empathy, and communication skills, but also offer older adults opportunities to share their stories, reflect on important life experiences, and remain actively engaged with their community. Research shows that well-designed intergenerational education programs can reduce social isolation among older adults and support developmental growth in students by fostering mutual respect and understanding across ages through shared learning, storytelling, and meaningful dialogue.
Intergenerational education programs like ours encourage sustained engagement, so participants are not just interacting once but building ongoing relationships that have long-lasting benefits. Older adults often express a renewed sense of purpose and connection, and students gain real-world insights that complement classroom learning. Together, these partnerships help bridge generational divides, promote positive attitudes toward aging, and contribute to stronger community cohesion that strengthens relationships across generations and communities.
